Empty Calories
Alcohol provides about seven calories per gram, almost as much as fat. But these calories provide no nutrition - no vitamins, no minerals, no protein. That's why they're called empty calories.
This matters because alcohol adds calories without adding satisfaction or nutrition. You can easily drink hundreds of calories without feeling full or getting anything your body needs.
Effects On Judgment
Beyond the calories, alcohol impairs judgment. After drinking, you're more likely to overeat, make poor food choices, and abandon healthy intentions. This is why "drunk food" and late-night pizza runs are so common.
Planning ahead helps. Eat a healthy meal before drinking. Decide in advance how much you'll drink. Have healthy snacks ready for after.
Moderation Guidelines
Moderation looks different for everyone. Current guidelines suggest up to one drink per day for women and two for men as moderate consumption. But some people should avoid alcohol entirely.
If you choose to drink, being mindful of how much and how often matters more than complete abstinence for most people. Track your consumption honestly.
