Two Different Signals
Hunger and appetite are not the same thing. True hunger is your body's signal that it needs fuel. Appetite is the desire to eat, which can come from emotions, habits, or external cues like seeing food.
Learning to distinguish between these helps you eat appropriately. True hunger comes with physical symptoms: stomach growling, low energy, difficulty concentrating. Appetite often comes suddenly and feels more like an urge.
Physical Hunger Signs
True hunger comes on gradually. It starts with mild stomach discomfort, growling, or slight shakiness. It goes away after eating any food. You can easily wait for food when truly hungry.
Appetite often feels like a sudden urge. It's tied to specific cravings. It's not satisfied by just any food - you want something specific. It can come even when you've recently eaten.
Building Awareness
Practice checking in with yourself before eating. Ask: Am I physically hungry or just wanting to eat? This simple question builds awareness over time.
Keep a journal for a few weeks. Note what triggered your urge to eat, what you ate, and how you felt afterward. Patterns will emerge.
