When Supplements Make Sense

By YBQRPC | Nutrition & Health

Food First Approach

Most people don't need supplements if they're eating a varied diet. Food provides nutrients in forms your body absorbs best. Supplements can help fill gaps, but they shouldn't replace eating well. Think of supplements as insurance, not a replacement for good nutrition.

When Supplements Help

Certain situations warrant supplementation. Vitamin D in winter for those in northern latitudes where sun exposure is limited. B12 for vegans, since it's primarily found in animal products. Iron for those with documented deficiencies. Fish oil for those who don't eat fatty fish regularly.

Getting tested before supplementing is wise. Too much of certain vitamins causes problems. More isn't always better, and some supplements can interact with medications.

Common Deficiencies

Vitamin D is probably the most common deficiency, especially in winter. Magnesium is another common shortfall. Many people don't get enough omega-3s if they don't eat fatty fish twice weekly.

If you suspect a deficiency, talk to your doctor about testing. Supplements are appropriate when you have a demonstrated need, not just because marketing tells you to take them.
