Understanding Your Thyroid

Your thyroid is a small butterfly-shaped gland in your neck that controls your metabolism. It affects everything from your energy levels to your weight to your mood. When it's not working right, everything feels off.

Thyroid problems are incredibly common, especially in women. Getting tested is important if you have symptoms. But nutrition can support thyroid function and help medications work better.

Iodine and Thyroid Function

Iodine is essential for thyroid hormone production. Your thyroid needs it to make the hormones that regulate metabolism. Most people get enough from regular diet, but iodine deficiency can cause problems.

Seaweed and iodized salt provide iodine. But too much can be as bad as too little. Balance matters more than going to extremes.

Foods That Support Thyroid

Selenium, zinc, and iron all support thyroid function. Brazil nuts, seafood, and lean meats provide these minerals. Eating a varied diet naturally provides what your thyroid needs.

Certain foods can interfere with thyroid function when eaten in very large amounts. These include raw cruciferous vegetables and soy. Cooking reduces these effects.

Working With Your Doctor

Nutrition supports thyroid health but doesn't replace medical treatment. If you have thyroid disease, work with your doctor to manage it. Diet complements rather than replaces medication.
